TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Pixboy’ – TouchArcade

We see A LOT of retro-inspired games on mobile, or really, in video games in general. Lots of stuff inspired by the 16-bit or 8-bit eras, but occasionally some that go back even further than that. Like the monochrome era of the original Game Boy or the surprisingly vibrant world of graphing calculator homebrew. These are what immediately came to mind when I first fired up Pixboy, a new platformer from developer Oaky Games.

When you’re dealing with essentially just black and white, you have to go that extra mile to give your visuals some extra detail and life, and Pixboy does a great job with this. It’s the kind of game that looks totally lo-fi on the surface, but actually runs so smoothly and is filled with fancier things like particle effects that wouldn’t have been possible on actual hardware of the day. There’s also a couple dozen unlockable color palettes so you can change up the look while retaining that retro visual style.

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVwSyow3iyI[/embed]

In fact unlockables are a big part of what I’m digging so much about Pixboy. This game is absolutely stuffed with secret areas to discover which hide hidden coins and popsicles to seek out and collect. A crown badge awaits those who collect all coins, and one for all popsicles, and a third for beating a level’s completion time. There’s even a special Pacifist badge to earn if you’re able to beat a level without killing any enemies, which can be super challenging.

Pixboy won’t redefine what you expect out of a platforming game. It’s mostly straightforward with some interesting wrinkles thrown in here and there to keep things fresh, and of course countless secrets to discover and goals to shoot for in its 40 well-designed levels. For platforming fans looking for their next fix, this should do nicely, and the players in our forums have been enjoying this one a lot too so be sure to see what others are saying about Pixboy.

Making Slinky Noises with Our Mouths – The TouchArcade Show #468 – TouchArcade

In this week’s show Eli recounts his finding of the slinky and then losing it again, and then contemplates the merits of just buying a new one (or a three pack). Sony Just Updated the ‘PlayStation App’ with Support for the New PlayStation Store, PS5, Messaging, and a Lot More – TouchArcade

With the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 set to arrive in less than two weeks depending on where you live, both Microsoft and Sony previously announced big updates to their own mobile apps. The big Xbox app update that recently went live cuts out many features like the store, redeeming codes, achievements, and more sadly. Over the years, Xbox has always had a way better mobile app compared to Sony’s offering that always felt like a web app with tweaks. Today, the big PlayStation App (Free) update has gone live and it is pretty great so far. Alongside the integration of messaging, the new interface, and support for voice chat are features everyone expected. I was afraid the store would get removed but Sony did something even better. The new store feels great to use in the app and you can remotely download games as you’d hope. Check out a video showcasing the app below:

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peX9k5wMqWk[/embed]

On PS5, this app will be able to remotely launch games, manage storage space, and more in addition to the features available right now. You can also track your trophies for games within the updated app for PS4 games right now. While I really do not like the new PlayStation web store that removed support for PS Vita and PS3 games, the mobile app experience for the store is good. It is going to be interesting to see how the store is improved over time because I can’t imagine the current web store is final given how it lacks basic features. Thankfully, the new app is great to use but I hope they update it to support landscape on iPad. If you already had the app installed, today’s new feature are all in the newest update. If you don’t have the app yet, you can get it on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. Have you pre-ordered a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S?

Liverpool boss Klopp bemoans Premier Leagues lack of leadership over substitute rule change

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has criticised the Premier League for a "lack of leadership" over the return to three substitutions in the competition this season.

Clubs could use five substitutes last season when the league restarted in June after a three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, but they voted against it for the 2020-21 campaign.

- Play English Soccer Pick 'Em with ESPN
- Stream FC Daily on ESPN+

Clubs participating in the Champions League and Europa League can still use five substitutes and Klopp said English clubs are at a disadvantage due to the rule change.

• Ex-England WC winner Stiles dies at 78
• Ronaldo negative for COVID after 19 days
• Ibra: You're not Zlatan, don't challenge virus
• Zidane: Benzema, Vinicius have cleared air
• Arsenal director of football steps down
• Pep wants City extension over Barca return

"All other leagues, pretty much, in the world have five subs and England has three subs," he told a news conference ahead of their Premier League match against West Ham United.

"That makes it a massive challenge. As you know seven clubs in the Premier League play three times a week and then we travel and that makes it tricky but we all have to deal with it. We will see how it will end but it's the most challenging season for sure."

When asked whether the rule should be reverted back again, Klopp replied: "Yes, but I don't think it's possible because of this system.

"For me, it's a lack of leadership to put the question on the table and say what do you want with that. It should have been differently sold, if that's the right word, with more information, knowing more what can happen and all these kind of things by Richard Masters [Premier League chief executive].

"We never asked for any advantage, one of the top seven clubs. It's because we knew our schedule, it will be incredibly difficult to have the best games every weekend in the Premier League as well. I think we should overthink it again to be honest."

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also questioned the decision against five substitutions while Manchester City's Pep Guardiola called on the Premier League to reintroduce the rule.

Liverpool will be without Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho for the foreseeable future due to injuries and Klopp said the league needs to do more protect footballers.

"My concern is the welfare of the players," he added. "Every now and then, it's a really big thing to talk about the mental welfare of the players but we have to talk about the physical welfare of players much more often because the boys always want [to play]. Even if they can't, they still want [to play] but we have to make fixture lists and schedules where they can.

"But this is a difficult year. It was always clear that we put in a season with nearly the same amount of games in a short period of time and we all wanted it, I wanted it, everybody wanted it.

"But that's the same in other leagues with lesser teams and they find it challenging. Ask in Germany,...

Mike Tyson makes stunning body transformation admission as Roy Jones Jr brands the pair 'freaks' ahead of exhibition bout

Mike Tyson has claimed he is at his lowest weight since he was a teenager ahead of his exhibition match with Roy Jones Jr at the end of November.

Iron Mike, 54, and Captain Hook, 51, will battle in the ring at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as they both turn the clock back.

Tyson is in the best shape of his life

Tyson hasn’t fought for 15 years and last tipped the scales at 16.6st when he faced Kevin McBride in 2005 but with his renewed passions and incredible vigour he’s whipped himself back into incredible shape.

In recent months his social media has been full of inspiring footage of him readying for action which has impressed fight fans.

And now the legendary pugilist and former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world has revealed just how much he has trimmed down.

Tyson said: “The last time I was this weight was 17 or 18 years old

'It's orgasmic sometimes' - Mike Tyson tells Joe Rogan he used to get erections from boxing when he was younger as he prepares to face Roy Jones Jr

“I’m really happy with everything I’ve been doing, it’s down to confidence and self affirmation.

“It’s amazing, I’m just ready to do this. I can’t explain it in words.

“I’m going to go as long as this is working. My legend is going to be that I gave a lot more than I took.”

On debut, against Hector Mercedes in 1985, he weighed in at 15.3st.

Mike Tyson is making a return to the ring against Roy Jones Jr and UK fans will be watching

Tyson’s opponent, Jones, only retired in 2018 after a stunning career but he has also been left amazed by Iron Mike’s training videos, branding the pair ‘freaks’.

He said: “I think he looked awesome. He looked very good. I was really proud to see him bounce back the way he did.

“Most guys, at 54, they start counting themselves out. When I came in at 32 years old, you are considered an old guy.

“You couldn’t box anymore. Now to see Mike hit the body bag like that, the way he is doing it. It’s phenomenal. It’s crazy. We are freaks.”

How to Get Noticed in a Noisy World

Be a pop of color in the green forest.

October

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

When the news cycle sounds cacophonous, it can seem almost impossible to make your voice heard above the din. How will you ever capture the attention of the frenzied public with quality information about your product, your services, your new book, your business?

Even if you cannot afford a big team of advertisers and publicists to help you out, there’s hope. Human nature itself is your secret weapon. Our ancestors developed the ability to differentiate between thousands, some say millions, shades of green. Look at a forest and notice how many shades you can see. Now, imagine one of them is bearing fruit, maybe a bright red apple or a cluster of yellow bananas. Your eye will zero in on the dissonant color. That’s how our species managed to survive: finding what it needs amid the mass of green. People still need what you’re offering. You just need to get them to see it.

Related: 5 Tips for Creating Social Media Videos That Get Noticed

The people who need to “eat” your message are attracted when you are a different color than the background noise. You need to change the “color” of your messaging to attract the attention of the people who need it. When the news cycle is negative, you need to become the bright spot that gets noticed.

It’s not easy being green. Being green is doing things the textbook way, making sure you post something on social media every day, sending out rote press releases, repeating the same message even if it is no longer producing results.

In order to “be the banana,” you’ll have to come up with something fresh, unique, different and outstanding. Something that catches the eyes of your potential customers and gives them what they long for: respite, nourishment, relief from the endless green.

Consider really going out on a limb. Here are a few ideas:

  • Introduce a playful, socially distanced contest that allows your customers to compete from home. "Send in your funniest pet video and we’ll post it on our site.” Nothing to do with your business, perhaps, but it’s still a bright red apple.
  • Offer a clever sale tied to some social improvement, like “donate a packaged, new mask into our charity box to get $5 off your next purchase.”
  • Come up with a fun way to remind your customers that the news cloud has a silver lining, like setting up a whiteboard and inviting them to write a positive message on it — and monitor it for the inevitable stupid comment of some teenage boy!
  • Host a virtual “comedy night” for your customers and prospects and bring in a clean comic. Record it and put it on your website and/or on YouTube with your logo. Perhaps you can emcee. You’ll earn the right to talk about your company or your brand message.
  • Lead...

Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 31st)

Another eventful week down in the year 2020AD, and Nintendo dropped a surprise Direct Mini on us all, with games cropping up unexpectedly on eShop, including cloud versions coming the the West, and a prominent prognosticator produced a peculiar take on Nintendo's Switch strategy.

With the weekend now upon us, though, it's time to discuss our weekend gaming plans. Members of Nintendo Life have done just that below, and we'd love for you to join in via our poll and comment sections. Enjoy!

Jon Cartwright, video producer

I'm struggling to even decide what to play after the Mini Direct dropped a truckload but Part Time UFO has been capturing my attention. I missed out on the initial mobile release but HAL's puzzler is incredibly charming and addictive - plus it has QBBY (from BOXBOY!) hidden in most levels which means it must be good. It kinda takes me back to the simplicity of World of Goo but with a quicker pace and jollier vibe.

I'll get around to revisiting No More Heroes and No More Heroes 2 before the year's end but for now, I'm actually going a bit further back in time. I've been on a bit of a Puyo Puyo kick in anticipation for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and ordered Puyo Puyo 2 for Saturn and Puyo Puyo Sun 64. I don't have a huge history with Compile's games so I'm hoping to give myself a history lesson with these two.

PJ O’Reilly, reviewer

Hello. This weekend I’m going to be getting stuck into a bunch of review stuff including Sniper Elite 4, a game I absolutely loved when it originally released, and Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia, which so far feels very Pokemon: Let’s Go, so keep an eye out for thoughts on those shortly. I’ll also be putting aside a little time for some Halloween horror-flavoured shenanigans with Little Nightmares and Layers of Fear, two games I’ve owned since they first came out and just haven’t got around to playing yet. Here’s hoping they scare the pants, trousers and socks right off my body! Have a spooky weekend whatever you’re playing and stay safe out there.

Gavin Lane, features editor

I'm itching to give Control on Switch a proper go. It was one of the games I hoped to see on Switch at the start of the year, although I wasn't holding out much hope. There are concerns when it comes to gaming via the cloud, but it seems that feedback from readers is generally positive so far, so I'm eager to spend more time with the game. A Halloween treat, indeed!

Elsewhere it's the same old story, really: a bit of the backlog, some Hades, and I'm sure I'll be meeting up with ol' Jack in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Stay safe, everybody!

Gonçalo Lopes, contributing writer

What a spooky weekend! As yearly traditions mandates it is time to break out the minis: Castlevania: Bloodlines and Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Mega Drive Mini; Splatterhouse, Daimakaimura and Akumajō Dracula X: Chi No Rondo on TurboGrafx-16 Mini; Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Super Metroid on Super NES Classic.

Sadly I have yet to figure...

How Taiwan’s COVID response became the world’s envy

While many countries around the world are hitting new highs in coronavirus cases, Taiwan has achieved a different kind of record — 200 days without a locally transmitted case.

Taiwan holds the world’s best virus record by far and reached the new landmark on Thursday, even as the pathogen explodes anew in Europe and the U.S. Taiwan’s last local case came on April 12; there has been no second wave.

What did this island of 23 million people do right? It has had 553 confirmed cases, with only seven deaths. Experts say closing borders early and tightly regulating travel have gone a long way toward fighting the virus. Other factors include rigorous contact tracing, technology-enforced quarantine and widespread mask wearing. Further, Taiwan’s deadly experience with SARS has scared people into compliance.

Subscribe to Eastworld for weekly insight on what’s dominating business in Asia, delivered free to your inbox.

“Taiwan is the only major country that has so far been able to keep community transmission of Covid eliminated,” said Peter Collignon, an infectious disease physician and professor at the Australian National University Medical School. Taiwan “probably had the best result around the world,” he said, and it’s “even more impressive” for an economy with a population about the same size as Australia’s, with many people living close to one another in apartments.

Taiwan will likely be among the few economies to grow this year, with the government in August forecasting that the gross domestic product will expand 1.56% in 2020.

Still, Taiwan isn’t out of the woods yet. The government confirmed three more imported cases Thursday, from the Philippines, U.S. and Indonesia, and in the past two weeks has recorded more than 20 imported cases. Also, others that fought the virus well initially, like Singapore and Japan, later had spikes in cases.

What countries with surging infections can take away from Taiwan’s experience is that nothing works without contact tracing those who have tested positive and then quarantining them, said Chen Chien-jen, Taiwan’s former vice president and an epidemiologist, in an interview.

Also, as it’s not easy to make people stay in quarantine, Taiwan has taken steps to provide meal and grocery delivery and even some friendly contact via Line Bot, a robot that texts and chats. There is also punishment — those who break quarantine face fines of up to NT$1million ($35,000).

Here is how Taiwan has achieved its milestone:

Border Control

Taiwan began shutting down to non-residents shortly after the pandemic broke out in January and has kept tight control over its borders since.

“Taiwan’s continual success is due to strict enforcement of border control,” says Jason Wang, director of Stanford University’s Center for Policy, Outcomes and Prevention. That includes symptom-based surveillance before travelers board flights and digital fence tracking via cellular...

Women's Big Bash League: Heather Knight stars in Sydney Thunder win

Knight added 122 in 10 overs with Thunder skipper Rachael Haynes, the Australia vice-captain
Women's Big Bash League, Sydney Showground:
Sydney Thunder 190-6 (20 overs): Knight 83, Haynes 39, Coyte 3-32
Adelaide Strikers 132-8 (20 overs): McGrath 46, Smith 3-26
Sydney Thunder won by 58 runs
Scorecard and table

England captain Heather Knight made her highest Women's Big Bash League score to help Sydney Thunder to a 58-run win over Adelaide Strikers.

Knight hit three sixes and 11 fours in her 83 from 39 balls, helping Thunder to 190-6 at the Sydney Showground.

That proved too much for Strikers, who reached 132-8, with Knight picking up the wicket of Amanda-Jade Wellington.

The England skipper is in her first season with Thunder, having played for Hobart Hurricanes in previous WBBLs.

The Sydney climate had not previously been kind to Knight this year - after England were eliminated from the Women's T20 World Cup in March when rain washed out their semi-final against India, and then prevented a result being possible in Thunder's first two WBBL games.

That had led Knight to tweet:external-link "Any danger Sydney!!! 3 in a row for the weather."

But Saturday's knock, in which she shared a fourth-wicket stand of 122 with Thunder captain Rachael Haynes, eclipsed her previous best WBBL score, an unbeaten 82 for Hurricanes against Melbourne Stars in 2018.

This entire WBBL season is being played at various venues around Sydney with players remaining in bio-secure bubbles because of the coronavirus pandemic.

While Knight finally escaped the rain for once, the weather ended Perth Scorchers' run chase halfway through their innings against Melbourne Renegades at Drummoyne Oval, but the Scorchers won by 18 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

England leg-spinner Sarah Glenn took 0-19 from four overs for the Scorchers, while team-mate Amy Jones was not required to bat.

Rain at the Showground then prevented a result in a reduced-overs game between Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes, whose innings was ended three balls short of the five overs they needed to face for a result to be possible.

The Sydney Sixers-Melbourne Stars game was washed out without a ball bowled.

SSC NA promises a re-run of the Tuatara's top speed record attempt

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3daTG4_JS_4[/embed]

Since then, SSC NA has said the wrong video may have come out, but stood by tis numbers, and said the record was certified using Dewetron GPS equipment. However Dewetron said it could not certify the results, and did not have the raw data, as Autoblog’s explainer breaks down in full.

Now, early on Saturday morning, SSC NA founder and CEO Jerod Shelby posted a video acknowledging the record-setting run as “tainted,” and said he dropped the ball on properly packaging the announcement in a way that could be verified and indisputable. While he didn’t break down details of what did or did not happen on October 10th, he promised that “in the near future” SSC North America will do the top speed run again, complete with witnesses and additional support from GPS companies to verify the data. He also invited Shmee150, Misha Charoudin and Robert Mitchell — some of the YouTubers who posted videos digging into the data — to come see SSC NA next attempt in person, and thanked everyone who looked into the facts of the run.

These past few months, it’s grown ever harder to recognize life in America. Thanks to Covid-19, basic day-to-day existence has changed in complicated, often confusing ways. Just putting food on the table has become a challenge for many. Getting doctors’ appointments and medical care can take months. Many schools are offering on-line only instruction and good luck trying to get a driver’s license or a passport renewed in person or setting up an interview for Social Security benefits. The backlog of appointments is daunting.

Meanwhile, where actual in-person government services are on tap, websites warn you of long lines and advise those with appointments to bring an umbrella, a chair, and something to eat and drink, as the Department of Motor Vehicles in Hudson, New York, instructed me to do over the summer. According to a September 2020 Yelp report, approximately 164,000 businesses have closed nationwide due to the pandemic, an estimated 60 percent of them for good. CNBC reports that 7.5 million businesses may still be at risk of closing. Meanwhile, more than 225,000 Americans have died of the coronavirus and, as a winter spike begins, it’s estimated that up to 410,000 could be dead by year’s end.

Then there are the signs of increasing poverty. Food banks have seen vast rises in demand, according to Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. According to a study done by Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy, between February and September, the monthly poverty rate increased from 15 percent to 16.7 percent, despite cash infusions from Congress’s CARES Act. That report also concluded that the CARES program, while putting a lid on the rise in the monthly poverty rate for a time, “was not successful at preventing a rise in deep poverty.” And now, of course, Congress seems...

NBA fears January start to season could cost league up to $1 billion in revenue losses, sources say

After pushing back a deadline until next Friday that would allow for the NBA to serve notice on termination of the collective bargaining agreement in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the league and the National Basketball Players Association are running short on time to agree on starting the NBA's season before Christmas.

And without assurances that the pandemic will allow for fans in arenas this season -- and projections that their absence could cost the league more than $4 billion in lost revenue -- the NBA fears delaying the start of the 2020-21 season until January could cost the league an additional $500 million to $1 billion in revenue losses next season and beyond, sources said.

The consequences for the league's players would be a steep drop in salaries due to the collective bargaining agreement's 50-50 revenue split between the league and players.

The NBA and NBPA are still at odds over a start date to the season, with the union resisting thus far a league plan to open a shortened 72-game regular season on Dec. 22 and complete the NBA Finals before the Summer Olympics in July, sources said.

The union has countered with a mid-January start, but wants to continue discussing the issue with its players, sources said. There is a level of impatience growing within the NBA, which wants to get a deal executed and get plans for a new season moving quickly, sources said.

NBPA executive director Michele Roberts has publicly and privately registered doubt about the desire of a significant portion of players for such a quick turnaround, with the Orlando bubble restart ending less than seven weeks before the presumed opening of training camps around Dec. 1.

Significant gaps remain between the NBA and NBPA on how the league will account for reductions in players' salaries in light of the significant financial losses for 2019-20 and steeper projections of losses next year, sources said. The NBA and NBPA split the basketball related income (BRI), and the league recently told teams that 40% of that revenue could be lost without gate receipts this season, sources said. The NBA's revenue was down 10% to $8.3 billion for the 2019-20 season, according to data provided to teams from the league.

Most NBA cities are still unable to have public gatherings of more than 500 people. The NBA plans to start the season without fans in arenas -- with little confidence that they'll be able to return any time early in the season as a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic spreads across the country.

A mid-January start around Martin Luther King Day would take the league's season past the July Summer Olympics and into the summer months, when the league fears television ratings would plummet. The NBA is estimating significant financial turmoil if the league has to compete with the Summer Olympics for television ratings in July and then be forced to adjust the NBA calendar for the 2021-22 season, sources said.

Both the NBA and NBPA have the option of tearing up the...

"We are sad because he has a small adductor injury. I don't think it is possible that he plays with Brazil. If he plays, that means he is not injured and that's a bad message. The news for me is that [he] will return after the break," said PSG manager Thomas Tuchel at his Friday news conference.

PSG have informed Brazil boss Tite and his medical staff of the situation, sources told ESPN. Neymar has also been in contact with the national team and has yet to be officially announced out of the squad.

Neymar's likely return would be in PSG's Ligue 1 match against Monaco on Nov. 20. However, he wants to be involved with Brazil as he is chasing Pele's Selecao goal-scoring record. Neymar, currently on 64, recently overtook Ronaldo and stands only 13 behind the three-time World Cup winner who finished his Brazil career with 77.

Ivanka Trump says she is 'unapologetically' pro-life

Ivanka Trump this week said that she is “unapologetically” pro-life, adding that motherhood changed how she thinks about the abortion issue.

“I respect all sides of a very personal and sensitive discussion,” Trump, the president's daughter and White House senior adviser told Real Clear Politics just days ahead of the election, “but I am also a mother of three children, and parenthood affected me in a profound way in terms of how I think about these things. I am pro-life, and unapologetically so.”

A White House aide added while Ivanka Trump’s stance is personal it also reflects the liberal shift he said Democrats have made on the issue.

Trump, who turned 39 on Friday, previously stayed silent on where she personally stood on abortion and reports of a secret meeting with then-Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards in 2017 left some pro-lifers concerned at the time.

Trump also told Real Clear Politics she considers herself a pragmatist and a “Trump Republican.”

“I think a lot of these labels, to be quite honest, are really limiting in terms of what you call yourself or how you identify,” she said of Republicans and Democrats.

President Trump has also evolved on abortion, coming out publicly as pro-life before the 2016 election after years of identifying as pro-choice.

More than 8 years behind schedule, Berlin’s new airport opens today amid an epic crisis in air travel

Berlin’s new international airport is opening today, with special Lufthansa and easyJet flights landing together to mark the occasion.

The timing could hardly be worse. For one thing, we’re in the middle of a pandemic that has shut down most international travel. The main terminal at Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (usually known as BER) may have the capacity to take up to 27 million passengers a year, but it will start operational life as a relative ghost town.

However, the opening is also notable for being a whopping eight and a half years late. BER’s schedule has become a long-running and somewhat tragic joke in and beyond the German capital, having been extended repeatedly for a variety of face-palm-inducing reasons.

Litany of errors

First, BER’s opening was canceled because of an incompetently designed fire protection system. It subsequently emerged that the system’s chief planner was not actually a qualified engineer, though his business cards claimed he was. “Everyone thought I was an engineer,” said Alfredo di Mauro, who was only a technical draftsman. “I just didn’t contradict them.”

Di Mauro was fired, as was the airport’s technical director, when a host of other flaws came to light. Some escalators were too short; cabling had been incorrectly installed; there weren’t enough check-in desks.

The federal and state governments running the project were urged to rip it down and start again, but they did not, and more trouble ensued: more fire-system flaws; a key contractor, Imtech, going bust; the biggest tenant—Air Berlin—also going bust; thousands of lights that could not be turned off, leading to monumental energy bills for an unopened airport; sliding doors with no power supply, requiring the reopening of walls; sagging ceilings in the parking garages; arrival and departure boards that wore out and needed replacement—years before the actual opening.

There was even a problem with the trees planted near the terminal. Around 600 had to be dug up and replanted, though reports differ as to whether this was because they were in the wrong place or because they were the wrong kind of tree.

BER’s budget started at €2.8 billion ($3.3 billion). It ended up costing over €4 billion more than that. The reasons included not only incompetence but corruption too. A department head was jailed in 2016 for taking bribes from Imtech, the contractor that went bankrupt.

Not the only one

The BER debacle has been viewed around the world as a grimly hilarious counterpoint to the stereotype of Germans as being extremely efficient and well-organized. This is understandable, given the international nature of major airports. (BER is Germany’s third-largest hub, after Frankfurt and Munich.)

But to those within the country, it is by no means the only recent example of major construction projects going way over schedule and budget.

Another notable example is that of Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie concert hall, known...

Covid-19 effect - he was 'lost' and 'a bit confused' at the start of IPL 2020, admits Quinton de Kock

5:46 PM IST
  • Vishal Dikshit

After finishing as the leading scorer for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2019, Quinton de Kock is back at the top of the chart for the team in IPL 2020. But, the opening batsman said, it was tougher than usual for him this year because the six months spent away from the game because of the Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa left him "lost" and "a bit confused" when he resumed batting.

After 12 innings, he has 392 runs - with a string of four 40-plus scores in between - and an average of nearly 40, but it started with a few low scores apart from a 20-ball 33 against the Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener. Thereafter, he managed 1, 14 and 0, scoring those 15 runs at a strike rate of 68.18.

"I was hitting the ball well in the nets. [I] just might have made a couple of silly mistakes in my first part of the tournament; nothing that can't be fixed," de Kock said at a media briefing on Friday. "Before, it was just a mental thing; I hadn't batted for a long time, so I was just trying to get over that mark. Once I found some rhythm, that's when I started to feel a lot better, especially out in the middle. It was just a matter of doing it out there."

When asked if his scratchy form at the start of the tournament was mainly an effect of the gap from March to September, he said, "Yeah, obviously. I think it did, a little bit. To be honest, I was a little bit lost and [it was] hard to build an innings. I didn't know when to go hard, when not to, I was a bit confused for some reason. I think it was because of the break.

"Getting some time to bat a little bit longer in the middle and having a chat to one or two of the coaches helped me out and to figure out, and [I] understand much better now."

After the first four matches, the Mumbai Indians' campaign moved to Sharjah for the first time, to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The stage was set for de Kock: the Sunrisers' leading bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was out with an injury, they were at the most batting-friendly venue in the UAE, and Rohit Sharma had opted to bat after winning the toss.

De Kock took his time to get his eye in, and also faced only 12 off the 36 balls in the powerplay, for 13 runs. At the other end, the Mumbai Indians lost both Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in that phase. Once he was dropped near the long-on boundary off part-time spinner Abdul Samad in the seventh over, de Kock tore into Samad and then took on Kane Williamson and Siddarth Kaul to smash 56 off their 24 balls, including four sixes, to finish with a 39-ball 67.

Following that, he scored 23, 53, 78*, 53 and 46* - across venues - to help the team register five wins in their next six matches. De Kock said his task has been to give Mumbai the "best start possible", and if he is still batting when the likes of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard come out, his plan is to give them strike as much as possible "because they're the bigger strikers of the ball".

Mumbai's opening combination changed once Sharma picked up a...

Five-star basketball recruit Caleb Houstan commits to Michigan

Five-star basketball recruit Caleb Houstan has committed to Michigan, he told ESPN on Friday.

"I was down to four great schools, but one definitely stood out to me the most. I decided to commit to coach Juwan Howard and the University of Michigan," Houstan said. "I was recruited by a lot of great schools, and I appreciate all the time they all spent with me and my family."

Houstan is the No. 10-ranked player in the 2021 high school class, making him the highest-ranked Michigan recruit since at least 2007, the first year of the ESPN recruiting database.

At 6-foot-8, Houstan has excellent size for a small forward with a versatile offensive skill set and is considered one of the best perimeter shooters in the high school game. He was the second-leading scorer at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, averaging 23 points in 29 minutes per game and ranking among the top players at the event in both made 3-pointers and free throw attempts. His Canada team went 5-1, losing in the championship game to the United States.

"Michigan really showed that they wanted me and that I was going to be a key part of their program," Houstan said. "They were invested in me as a player and really took the time to get to know my game. They run a system that I know I can do well in. I also developed great relationships with their coaching staff. Coach Howard led my recruitment and was involved throughout the entire process; Coach [Saddi] Washington as well and Coach [Phil] Martelli were all great too."

2 Related

Houstan was slated to graduate high school in 2022 but elected to reclassify over the summer, making him eligible for the 2022 NBA draft. Houstan said Howard's track record as an NBA player and assistant coach with the Miami Heat was a factor in his decision.

"Coach Howard was a big part of my decision -- his background and our relationship," Houstan said. "He played in the NBA for 19 years and knows what it takes to get there and stay there. I think he can help me both on and off the court and in preparing to get to the next level. I know he's going to push me every single day in order for me to get better and develop as a player."

Michigan is in the midst of building what appears to be a top-10 recruiting class in 2021, after previously nabbing three four-star recruits in Frankie Collins, Kobe Bufkin and Isaiah Barnes. Houstan will likely play a significant role on the wing regardless of whether sophomore Franz Wagner, a potential first-round pick and a 6-9 sharpshooter who can play either forward position, returns.

"I expect to be a key part of their offense," Houstan said. "They need me to step in right away and be a big contributor, and I want to do that. I want to be able to show who I am as a player and have [an] impact right away."

Houstan had a busy spring and summer planned prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. He was slated to be a featured player on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit with team UPlay Canada before suiting up again for the Canadian national...

Lewis Hamilton backs injured OBJ to be an all-time great

Six-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has backed Odell Beckham Jr. to achieve greatness despite seeing his 2020 season cut short with an ACL injury.

The Cleveland Browns star wide receiver will miss the rest of the season after limping off during the Oct. 25 divisional matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Beckham has played only 39 out of 64 games over the past four seasons because of injuries.

Beckham was a guest of Hamilton's at last year's Monaco Grand Prix, which the Mercedes driver won. Hamilton, who is inching closer to a record-equalling seventh world championship and at last weekend's Portuguese Grand Prix won a record 92nd race, has backed his friend to make a full recovery.

"I haven't spoken to him; I messaged him the other day about his injury, but as you can imagine when you go through something like this, he's probably having some time focusing on healing and probably receiving a lot of messages," Hamilton said. "I know at some point we'll connect.

"He's an incredible talent, and he's still young [Beckham will turn 28 next week], I think he's got such a bright future. What he's done already with his new team has been impressive.

"I think what's really, really important -- and I've not done my ACL before -- but what I think I know about recovering is to never rush those things, just focus on healing so you can be even stronger. He's already a machine. Those athletes are absolutely incredible, so I'm sure he'll have the best advice and help in terms of recovering.

"But I don't know what the next steps are for him in terms of becoming the great that I know that he can be. That's his journey, and I know that he'll know what he needs to do to do that."

Liga MX clubs unveil stunning new kits

If you are looking for the best new soccer kits for 2020-21, forget the Premier League, or even the UEFA Champions League -- Mexico's Liga MX has some of the best shirts you'll find anywhere this season with these special edition jerseys to commemorate the Day of the Dead.

Mexican sportswear manufacturer Charly has conjured up a series of Dia de los Muertos-themed third alternate shirts for its five Liga MX clubs -- Atlas, Pachuca, Queretaro, Santos Laguna and Tijuana -- ahead of the Nov. 1-2 festivities.

2 Related

Charly has taken inspiration from the calaveras (skulls), ofrendas (altars), pan de muerto (sweet bread), cempasuchil (marigold flowers) and other traditional symbols of the festival of remembrance.

The result is five shirts that truly capture the spirit of the Day of the Dead and are uniquely Mexican, but also stand up as great jerseys in their own right.

- Watch "Coco" on Disney+
- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
- ESPN+ viewer's guide: Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, FA Cup and more

The grey shirt, which Charly says is "inspired by the sweet ending that the calaverita de azucar [sugar skull, often eaten during the festivities] brings us," might just be the pick of the bunch, but the first jersey of the series to be unveiled didn't get an altogether positive reaction on social media.

Guadalajara-based Atlas are outside of the playoff spots, haven't won a league title since 1951 and had just lost the city's Clasico Tapatio to Chivas when the shirt was revealed on Twitter.

Fans of rival clubs were quick to cruelly ask whether a Day of the Dead shirt should be worn by "a team that is dead."

- Order Atlas' Day of the Dead jersey from Charly

Los Tuzos' shirt pays homage to "la flor de cempasuchil" (marigold), which can be seen inside cemeteries and around altars all over Mexico and beyond.

It's said that the bright orange-yellow colour guides the deceased person to the altar -- which usually has the person's favourite food, drink or music -- due to its scent and sunlike radiance.

On the pitch, Pachuca players certainly won't have the excuse of not being able to pick out their teammates.

- Order Pachuca's Day of the Dead jersey from Charly

"I will support you here and in the next life!" reads the blurb for the purple Queretaro shirt. "Our passion goes into the beyond."

The shirt has feminine skulls down the stripes, influenced by La Dama de la Muerte (Lady Death) or La Catrina, whose painted face has become perhaps the most recognisable symbol of the Day of the Dead internationally.

- Order Queretaro's Day of the Dead jersey from Charly

The intricate patterns are based on the delicate paper designs, usually of skulls, used to adorn altars that families put up in houses to honour deceased family members.

"The green-and-white should be defended like a warrior, even after death," reads the description for Los Guerreros' green shirt.

Baltimore Ravens sign LT Ronnie Stanley to five-year, $98.75M extension, source says

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Left tackle Ronnie Stanley was late for the Baltimore Ravens' morning meetings Friday, prompting center Matt Skura to reach out to see if something was wrong.

"I got something to do," Stanley texted back.

It wasn't until later that teammates found out that Stanley had been busy signing a five-year extension, which continues the Ravens' commitment to keeping young All-Pro talent.

Stanley becomes the NFL's second-highest-paid left tackle, striking a $98.75 million extension, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. His annual average of $19.75 million trails only that of Houston's Laremy Tunsil ($22 million per season).

Stanley's deal maxes out at $112.866 million, the source said. He did surpass Tunsil in three areas: signing bonus ($22.5 million), total guarantees ($70.866 million, over $16 million more than Tunsil) and payout through March 31 ($47.116 million).

"I'm very appreciative just to the whole organization, specifically Ozzie [Newsome, former Ravens GM] drafting me with the sixth pick [in 2016] and having faith when I know people were in his ear trying to persuade him other ways," Stanley said. "I'm just really happy that I could prove him right."

2 Related

The extension keeps Stanley protecting Lamar Jackson's blind side through the 2025 season and comes 29 days after the Ravens signed All-Pro cornerback Marlon Humphrey to an extension that also was for five years and $98.75 million.

"Ronnie is the mainstay on our offensive line," Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said. "He's a shutdown left tackle who excels on the field and in our community. This is just the beginning for Ronnie, and we could not be happier for him and his family."

Stanley, 26, used his size, athleticism and strength to develop into the game's best left tackle last season, when he allowed six pressures -- the fewest by an offensive tackle in 14 years -- during Jackson's NFL MVP campaign. He also was a key blocker in Baltimore's dominant running game, which set an NFL record for single-season rushing yards in 2019. All of this earned him All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for the first time in his career.

Through seven weeks this season, Stanley has a pass block win rate of 96.8%, the highest among qualified offensive tackles. His 78.3% run block win rate ranks ninth among offensive tackles.

"It matters to him," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "It's important to him. He wants to be the best. He cares about it. We've had many conversations about that."

The Ravens drafted Stanley hoping he could fill the long-standing void left by a Hall of Fame lineman. After Jonathan Ogden retired in 2007, Baltimore went through seven starting left tackles in eight years: Jared Gaither, Adam Terry, Michael Oher, Bryant McKinnie, Eugene Monroe, James Hurst and Kelechi Osemele.

"More than anything, he's a smart guy," Harbaugh said. "He understands the value of hard work. He really is a technician at what he does. He talks about that all the time. And really, at that position, along...

New Jersey's Gov. Murphy won't rule out another coronavirus lockdown as cases spike

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday that “all options are on the table,” including another lockdown, amid a spike in coronavirus cases in the state, according to reports.

“If we have to shut the whole place down we will,” Murphy told Yahoo Finance. “We were one of the first, if not the first state to do that in March. I just hope we can avoid it again this time.”

The governor had warned Thursday that a second wave of the virus has hit the state as cases and hospitalizations surged, according to NJ.com.

Murphy said the state hadn’t seen daily cases numbers over 2,000 since May and urged residents to wear masks and social distance.

“We’re reporting 2,089 new positive cases, pushing our cumulative total to 236,523,” he tweeted Friday. “Everyone needs to take this seriously.”

He specifically mentioned the possibility of having to shut down indoor dining but said he was hopeful schools that have reopened won’t have to close again, NJ.com reported.

Struggling restaurants in the state have opened up to 25% percent capacity, according to Yahoo, and another lockdown could be devastating for business.

Recent Match Report - Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals, Indian Premier League 2020, 50th Match

4:39 PM ET
  • Vishal Dikshit

Rajasthan Royals 186 for 3 (Stokes 50, Samson 48) beat Kings XI Punjab 185 for 4 (Gayle 99, Rahul 46, Archer 2-26, Stokes 2-32) by seven wickets

A breath-taking half-century from Ben Stokes and a perfectly-paced 48 from Sanju Samson trumped a belligerent 99 from Chris Gayle to keep the Rajasthan Royals alive in the playoff race with a seven-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab in Abu Dhabi, where KL Rahul's team is yet to win a match. The Royals' chase of 186 was set up in the powerplay itself by Stokes' 26-ball 50, and even though he fell in the sixth over, Samson's classy 25-ball innings and some enterprising batting from Steven Smith and Jos Buttler against a dew-wet ball took the Royals to 12 points - level with the Kings XI and the Kolkata Knight Riders - and helped them jump from seventh to fifth place.

Chris Gayle, the Kings XI Punjab batsman, has been fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching the IPL code of conduct during the match against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi on Friday. He admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL's code of conduct and accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee.

Samson and Stokes carried forward their form from the win against the Mumbai Indians; Stokes' handsome pulls and unorthodox reverse sweeps helped him collect six fours and three sixes for a strike rate of 192.30, and Samson's well-timed strokes against both pace and spin brought down the Royals' asking rate dramatically to just seven by the 14th over. Samson took the baton after Stokes' dismissal and reduced the equation to just 41 from 34 balls by the time he fell, which made it fairly easy for Smith and Buttler to seal the Royals' fifth win while chasing.

A Royal performance by the top order

Right from the first over, the Royals' batsmen took on each one of the Kings XI bowlers. If it was Stokes who went after M Ashwin in the powerplay for 16 runs, aided by two sixes, later it was Robin Uthappa and Samson who kept finding boundaries against Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh.

Openers Uthappa and Stokes attacked Mohammed Shami and Singh early on, which meant that as soon as Stokes found mid-off in the sixth over off Chris Jordan, the Kings XI brought legspin on from both ends against two right-hand batsmen. Barring an expensive ninth over from Singh for 14 runs, Ashwin and Bishnoi bowled six overs on the trot, and Uthappa and Samson milked them for 52 runs. Uthappa relied on singles to give Samson the strike, and the younger man aited until the tenth over to tear into the bowlers. When he saw flight, he lofted it straight back, and when he saw the length even marginally short, he cut and pulled to propel his strike rate to nearly 200 at one point.

Uthappa holed out off Ashwin for 30 while attempting a second straight six, and Samson was run-out while attempting an unnecessary single in the 15th over, but their fifty partnership had done enough for the middle order.

Michigan bars, restaurants will require diners' names, phone numbers starting Monday

Diners in Michigan will be required to give their name and phone number to restaurants and bars starting Monday in an effort to contain a recent coronavirus surge, according to reports.

The new rule was put in place by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday and also includes limiting indoor gatherings without fixed seating -- like in restaurants -- to 50 people and individual tables to six people, The Detroit News reported.

The state set a record for new cases Thursday with 3,675, according to FOX 17 of Grand Rapids.

Restaurants in the state currently operate at 50% capacity and servers are struggling with customers who don’t like the current restrictions, Scott Ellis, executive director of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association, told FOX 17. “Our frontline servers have already had trouble dealing with masks and mandates and mandating masks,” he said. “We did de-escalation training and all kinds of other things to help with that and now we’re taking to the next level. We have to gather someone’s personal information?”

He added, “I think when you’re going to sit down at a restaurant you just don’t expect someone to take your name and number because you’re coming to have a drink or a burger.”

Establishments could be fined $1,000 for not following the order, according to FOX 17.

Robert Gordon, director of the Department of Health and Human Services, said the state is taking “targeted action” to areas that are “particularly severe sources of spread.”

“We are issuing guidance that is a very clear road map for what we need to do bring cases down,” he added, according to The Detroit News.

Wyoming vs. Hawaii: How to watch live stream, TV channel, NCAA Football start time

Through 3 Quarters

The point spread is against the Wyoming Cowboys, but thus far the points are on their side. They have emerged as the frontrunner after three quarters and are ahead of the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 17-7.

RB Xazavian Valladay has led the way so far for the Cowboys, as he has rushed for one TD and 147 yards on 28 carries. Hawaii's only offensive touchdown has come from RB Dae Dae Hunter.

Who's Playing

Hawaii @ Wyoming

Current Records: Hawaii 1-0; Wyoming 0-1

What to Know

A Mountain West battle is on tap between the Wyoming Cowboys and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at 9:45 p.m. ET Friday at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium. Hawaii will be strutting in after a victory while Wyoming will be stumbling in from a defeat.

The Cowboys fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Nevada Wolf Pack last week but wound up with a less-than-desirable result, falling 37-34. The game was as close as the oddsmakers predicted, but Wyoming had been the slight favorite coming in. The losing side was boosted by QB Levi Williams, who passed for one TD and 227 yards on 31 attempts in addition to rushing for two TDs and 40 yards.

Special teams collected 14 points for Wyoming. K John Hoyland delivered a perfect 4-for-4 game.

Meanwhile, Hawaii had to kick off their season on the road last week, but they showed no ill effects. They took down the Fresno State Bulldogs 34-19. QB Chevan Cordeiro had a stellar game for the Rainbow Warriors as he accumulated 229 passing yards in addition to rushing for two TDs and 116 yards. Cordeiro's longest run was for 54 yards in the fourth quarter.

Hawaii's defense was a presence as well, as it collected three interceptions and one fumble. DB Eugene Ford snatched up two of those interceptions, one with 9:46 remaining in the first quarter, the other with 12:58 left to play in the third quarter.

The Cowboys were within striking distance but couldn't close the gap when the teams previously met two seasons ago as they fell 17-13 to Hawaii. Maybe Wyoming will have more luck at home instead of on the road? Watch the contest and check back on CBS Sports for all the details.

Apple ordered to pay VirnetX $503 million for VPN patent lawsuit

The seemingly endless legal battle between Apple and VirnetX still rages on, and the latest development may cost the tech giant half a billion dollars. A jury in Tyler, Texas has ruled that Apple has to pay VirnetX $502.8 million in royalties for VPN on Demand, the iOS feature that lets users configure their devices to automatically start or stop a VPN connection. According to Bloomberg, it took the jury 90 minutes to come to a decision.

This courtroom saga started a decade ago after VirnetX accused Apple of infringing on its intellectual properties. It says FaceTime, iMessage and VPN on Demand violate patents it owns related to secure communications, particularly from technology it developed for the US Central Intelligence Agency. VirnetX originally asked the court for $700 million, while Apple told the court it believed it owed the other party a much smaller amount ($113 million). The tech giant was ordered to pay VirnetX $450 million a few months ago, but that was for earlier versions of the features VirnetX says infringe upon its IPs. This ruling means Apple has to pay $502.8 million on top of that amount.

Maryland stuns Minnesota by storming back to force overtime and win on missed extra point

Getty Images

It was an overtime thriller in College Park, Maryland, on Friday night as the Big Ten opened its second week of play. Maryland came out with a rousing victory, while Minnesota suffered an absolute heartbreaker to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Taulia Tagovailoa led the Terrapins to their first win of the season, totalling five touchdowns including the team's lone score in overtime. The younger brother of former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa, Taulia and Maryland put themselves in front with that possession but received an assist towards victory by way of a missed extra point by Minnesota redshirt freshman kicker Brock Walker.

The Terps struck first in overtime with a 2-yard touchdown run from Tagovailoa that was set up by a pass interference call in the end zone against receiver Jeshaun Jones. Maryland followed that up with a customary extra point.

The Golden Gophers then responded with a 2-yard touchdown run from Seth Green that was set up by a pass interference call in the end zone against Chris Autman-Bell. Unfortunately for Minnesota, it did not follow Maryland's lead and missed the extra point that would have forced a second overtime.

After a rough start against Northwestern, Tagovailoa had his breakout game, throwing for 394 yards on 26-of-35 passing with five total touchdowns (three passing). He led the Terps offense to 17 straight points in the fourth quarter after they were down 38-21 through the first three periods -- the first team in college football to do that this season.

The quarterback wasn't the only standout on the evening for Maryland as its rushers and receivers showed out as well. Jones and Dontay Demus Jr. each racked up over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown, while running back Jake Funk rushed for an astounding 221 yards and found the end zone once. It's also worth noting that on the other side, Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim ran for an impeccable 207 yards and four touchdowns.

From ‘Fall Guys’ to ‘Among Us,’ How America Turned to Videogames Under Lockdown

Videogames were already a multibillion-dollar industry. The pandemic is sending them to another level.

With so many people taking a break from movie screenings and dining out, spending on videogames and equipment has been hitting all-time highs every month since March. People who already played videogames are playing more, and former gamers have dug their dusty consoles out of the closet to revive the hobby. Newbies are taking up the habit, too.

New releases such as “Animal Crossing: New Horizon” and older hits like “Grand Theft Auto V” are reeling in players across generations and geographies, as gamers are drawn—at least in part—by the ever-increasing opportunities to socialize with friends and strangers inside virtual worlds.

The surge in popularity is accelerating a shift in the balance of power within the global entertainment landscape. Musicians, athletes and politicians are increasingly seeking out games and game-streaming platforms for attention. And tech giants are betting big that the trend will outlast the pandemic: Microsoft Corp. , for instance, announced plans in September to spend $7.5 billion to acquire the company behind the popular Doom game franchise.

Over the summer, Jason Anthony went from playing videogames only on weekends to playing daily. His new routine didn’t change when he went back to commuting to the office in September after a six-month stretch of working from home.

Why the Left Had to Steal the Right’s Dark-Money Playbook (Bonus Episode)

The sociologist Sudhir Venkatesh spent years studying crack dealers, sex workers, and the offspring of billionaires. Then he wandered into an even stranger world: social media. He spent the past five years at Facebook and Twitter. Now that he’s back in the real world, he’s here to tell us how the digital universe really works. In this pilot episode of a new podcast, Venkatesh interviews the progressive political operative Tara McGowan about her digital successes with the Obama campaign, her noisy failure with the Iowa caucus app, and why the best way for Democrats to win more elections was to copy the Republicans.

Welcome to this special bonus episode of Freakonomics Radio. As you probably know, we’ve been expanding the Freakonomics Radio Network, adding new shows now and again. You’re about to hear the pilot episode of what we think might be another new show worth adding. We’d love to hear what you think, so when you’re done, drop us a line at radio@freakonomics.com.

The first thing you’ll hear is a brief segment in which I interview the host of this new show — a person you may recognize if you’ve read his amazing book Gang Leader for a Day or the chapter in Freakonomics called “Why Do Drug Dealers Live With Their Moms?” That was based on research done by the host of this new show, Sudhir Venkatesh, who during graduate school in Chicago spent several years embedded with a gang whose main business was selling crack cocaine. Hope you enjoy this special episode — and, again, we’d love to hear what you think.

Sudhir VENKATESH: I’m Sudhir Venkatesh and I’m a sociologist at Columbia University.

Stephen DUBNER: So, you’re a sociologist, but you also call yourself an ethnographer. What’s the difference?

VENKATESH: An ethnographer is that fancy academic term. And all it really is, is that I hung out with people for a long period of time.

DUBNER: So, in addition to the crack-selling gang in Chicago, name some other groups that you’ve hung out with over the years.

VENKATESH: I studied sex workers and I studied gun traffickers. And in New York City, when I came here to get a job at Columbia, I began studying the wealthy, the children who were inheriting lots of money — for me, a secret world.

DUBNER: And then around five years ago, if I have the timing right, you wound up embedding yourself in a very different kind of ecosystem, yes?

VENKATESH: I was very surprised to find out that Mark Zuckerberg put Gang Leader for a Day, the book that I wrote, on his monthly reading list in 2015. And that led to a conversation between me and Facebook. And eventually I went over and went into another world that was really pretty secretive for...
